09.07.2009 FNMD mentioned in New DFID Strategy

The Facility for New Market Development project is featured in DFID‘s new strategy document, the White Paper titled "Eliminating World Poverty: Building Our Common Future", unveiled on July 6, 2009.

Britain will target foreign aid at improving security and justice in the world‘s most "fragile" states.  International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander said that half of new bilateral funding will be committed to states ravaged by war, weak governments, and poverty-fuelled civil unrest.  Countries such as Sudan, Somalia, and Afghanistan will be the main beneficiaries of the switch, set out in a
White Paper that argues that security and justice are "basic services,” alongside health, education, water, and sanitation.

As part of Britain‘s support for fragile and post-conflict countries, the White Paper states that "economic development can help tackle instability and insecurity by giving everyone a stake in peace. But in difficult environments, especially just after a conflict, investment does not flow." FNMD is cited as an example of a project that helps to generate economic opportunities by encouraging businesses to take risks in an unstable environment. The White Paper highlights some of the sales results that FNMD clients have already achieved in new export markets, thanks to FNMD support.

The White Paper also includes a proposal to re-brand British aid in a bid to raise public awareness at home and abroad and help maintain support for spending during the economic downturn.  DFID will use the name "UKaid" in the field.
